Lemon-Ginger-Cayenne Cold Remedy

IMG_1602

Sorry for the silence yesterday. I woke up feeling under the weather–some weird sinus/sore throat combo. Yesterday was the day I had designated to write my next review for Our Hen Houseย and I didn’t have the stamina to be at the computer long enough to do that, get my work for the journal done (a.k.a. my job), and do a post… So something had to give. Luckily, I got my work done and I got the review off to the lovely ladies at Our Hen House and then took a nap, went for a walk with Maizy and did a little calling around for my dissertation research. Today, I’m not feeling much better, but I’m trying to power through it with the help of this delicious cold remedy drink. I use one of two variations of this drink when I’m feeling under the weather. If I’m just feeling like I have a cold, often I’ll just make a lemon, ginger, cayenne shot. If my throat hurts, or I just feel like sipping a warm drink, I’ll make a hot drink version like I did today.

The Recipe

Serves 1

FOR THE SHOT:

juice of 1 lemon

1 Tbls ginger juice, or finely grated ginger

sprinkle of cayenne

Put ingredients in a shot glass. Stir. Knock it back if you’re feeling brave!

FOR THE HOT DRINK:

juice of 1 lemon

1 Tbls ginger juice, or finely grated ginger

sprinkle of cayenne

1 tsp agave or other sweetener (or to taste)

1 cup or less of boiling water

Add lemon, ginger, agave and cayenne to a mug. Heat water and fill the mug the rest of the way with hot water. Stir well. Sip.

Do you have any home cold/sinus remedies that make you feel better? Any suggestions would be fantastic!ย Happy Friday!

  1. Sorry to hear you’re sicky, but well done! taking good care of yourself. I make a fresh sage, vinegar, honey concoction for sore throats, but this sounds delicious. Will try it next time there’s a need.

    1. Thanks, honey bun. Fresh sage, vinegar concoction sounds delish! Would you be willing to share the recipe? xoxo

  2. Yuck! I hope you’re feeling better! I make a similar drink, but i add a couple of cloves of crushed garlic – nature’s antibiotic. Jason is a bit of a germaphobe and won’t kiss me when i’m sick, so the breath thing isn’t a problem in our house. ๐Ÿ˜›

For sore throats, we make a tea that’s a blend of blackberry leaves, sage, hyssop, calendula, marshmallow root, thyme and licorice root. It was the only thing that got Jason through having strep throat!

    1. That tea sounds great! ๐Ÿ™‚ It sounds a little like the Throat Coat from that traditional medicinals brand of teas (sometimes I get that for a sore throat). Hope to see you soon! xoxo

  3. I’ve done these shots for years now whenever I’m feeling a cold coming on. They’re a bit intense, so I just made your tea version and it’s a much softer approach with the same benefits plus the added warmth of a hot drink when you’re feeling a bit low.

Now, if the weather would just decide if it wants to be spring or continue clinging to winter, I think my body would be much happier!

    Thanks for so much this.

    1. So glad you enjoyed the tea version. The weather has been so crazy lately! Thanks for commenting. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Wow! I always knew that ginger was a detoxifier but I’ve always hated the taste. I’ve heard of a honey, lemon and cayenne pepper drink, but, while comforting, never did much for me in terms of making me feel better.

The ginger shot was just amazing. My roommate and I were both bedridden all weekend, and I had enough and saw your recipe. Ran a few lemons and a LOT of ginger through the juicer (the stuff I had left over, I mixed with hot water and honey for the hot drink)… And a few hours later… wow wow wow!! I feel night and day. We both feel LOTS better.

I thought I was going to have to call in sick for work tmr. I’m just going to take another shot in the morning. This is great! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Gaby — I’m so glad to hear the ginger shot helped you feel better! It’s definitely been a magic combo for me when I’m feeling crummy and I’m so glad it helped you, too. Thanks for letting me know! ๐Ÿ™‚
