Seattle

This page includes places to eat and things to do that are vegan or vegan-friendly in Seattle. If you don’t see one of your favorite spots on the list, leave a comment below and I’ll make sure to check it out.

PLACES TO SHOP:

Vegan Haven (formerly Sidecar for Pigs Peace)- University District, Washington’s only 100% vegan store. Lots of groceries, gifts, bodycare products, companion animal food–all vegan and all supporting Pigs Peace Sanctuary.

PLACES TO EAT:

* omnivore with good vegan options

** vegetarian with vegan options

*** all vegan (yes!)

Annapurna, * Capitol Hill- An Indian, Nepali, and Tibetan food restaurant. Really cozy atmosphere, large menus with tons of vegan options which are all clearly marked as vegan.

Araya’s Place,*** U-District/Madison Valley – An all-vegan Thai restaurant, with a full lunch buffet. Good food and plan to arrive hungry, because it’s very filling! The Madison Ave location has a *wonderful* lunch special and the space is beautiful. One of our favorites!

Bamboo Garden,***  Lower Queen Anne – All vegan (except the fortune cookies), this spot has traditional Chinese food with some fake meats and lots of vegetable options.

Bang Bang Café, * Belltown – A Belltown café with some great vegan options, including a breakfast burrito, vegan sandwiches, vegan soups and a vegan mac’n’cheese.

Black Coffee Co-op, *** Capitol Hill – A worker co-op, café and community space. Hosts events and their food is all vegan. Can’t wait to check them out!

Boom Noodle,* U-Village/Bellevue- This is a trendy, Asian fusion place with some good vegetarian/vegan options and a fresh juice bar. Just check with the server to make sure you’re getting the vegan option.

Café Flora,** Madison Valley- This is a Seattle institution of vegetarian and vegan fare. For dinner, it’s a place for special occasions (a bit on the pricey side). The real gem at Café Flora is weekend brunch where there are lots of vegan options and the prices are the same as any other brunch joint. Their seasonal cornmeal waffles are amazing and they have a great vegan Caesar salad.

Chaco Canyon Café,*** U-District/West Seattle- Delicious all-vegan, raw food with a full juice bar and 95% organic. It’s a lovely spot for some fresh, healthful food and they are great about accommodating food allergies. The food at Chaco is 100% vegan, but they do have cow’s milk as an option in their coffee bar.

Cherry Street Coffee House, * Multiple Locations – Local coffee chain with some great vegan food options as well.

Cyber Dogs, ** Downtown/Convention Center – Vegetarian hot dog shop with Internet stations, lots of vegan options. Coffee and breakfast options, too.

Fire and Earth Kitchen, *** Shoreline – Fire and Earth Kitchen is all-vegan and gluten-free and offers cooking classes, food coaching, catering prepared meals. Their food looks positively lovely!

Flowers,* U-District- A mostly vegan daily lunch buffet of a pretty eclectic range of food, from Mediterranean to Indian and beyond. Some really delicious offerings and very filling.

Flying Apron Bakery,*** Fremont/Redmond– This bakery is vegan and gluten-free. I really enjoy their cookbook, listed on my Resources page. My favorite is their Pumpkin Ginger Square and their kale salad. Some of their stuff has that bean flour taste, but overall, a very good vegan/gluten-free option. Some products available in the co-ops around town, too.

Georgetown Liquor Company, ** Georgetown- Pub fare with tons of vegan options and weekend brunch. Georgetown is great, by the way. Stop by on Saturdays for the farmers’/flea market!

Healeo, * Capitol Hill- Heaven! A full juice/smoothie bar, with a nice menu of fresh and healthy breakfast and lunch/dinner options. They have lots of vitamins and supplements for sale as well. For the sweet tooth (and boy, do I have one), the vegan hemp vanilla softserve ice cream is awesome.

In the Bowl,** Capitol Hill- They have a huge menu of Thai food. Most dishes have an option of various noodles and fake-meat selections (ask about the fake meats — there’s some question about whether or not they are vegan or just vegetarian). The spicy scale is spicy, so order fewer stars than you would normally.

Jhan Jay, ** Wallingford/ Ballard – All vegetarian Thai food – many things can be made vegan. Lovely ambiance and service.

Loving Hut,*** International District- Part of the international chain of Loving Huts, an all-vegan eatery started by the Supreme Master Ching Hai. Lots of Vietnamese dishes, with many fake-meat options as well as vegetable.

Mighty-O Donuts,** Wallingford (Tangletown)- 100% Vegan Donuts! These are good, cake-style (or old-fashioned style) donuts in a gazillion flavors. You can go to the café, or they’re available all over town in cafés, and grocery stores. Once you get to know what they look like, you’ll start seeing them everywhere.

Molly’s at the Henry,* U-District (UW Campus)- This place used to be better; they used to make all their own food onsite and things were customizable. Now you can’t order things without cheese, so it limits the menu considerably. They do have a vegan salad or two and a vegan soup and they have the Hangry Vegan wrap, which is pretty good. Located in the basement of the Henry Art Gallery on UW’s campus.

Pizza Pi, *** U-District – All vegan pizza joint. I’ve only eaten here once so far, but loved the Mediterranean pizza and look forward to trying other things on the menu.

Plum Bistro,*** Capitol Hill-  My favorite way to order at Plum is sides. Ordering a few of their vegetable sides is a great way to eat. Vegan food can be delicious vegetables; it doesn’t have to try to be meat! One friend goes crazy for their Mac N Yease. It’s good, but very rich, so I like to share it with the table when I go.

Remedy Teas,** Capitol Hill- Another piece of vegan heaven on Capitol Hill. All their soups are vegan all the time. But my personal favorite combo is a vegan cucumber tea sandwich (!) and a pot of the Black Satin tea (an Assam with 1 part vanilla, 1 part cacao, 1 part mint,  10 parts delicious!). A nice quiet place to study inside or outside.

St. Dames,** Rainier Valley- A neighborhood restaurant featuring some really good vegan and vegetarian food. Open late, full bar, reasonably priced. The best part- one of their most common sides for their entrees is braised tamari kale. Yum! Biscuits and gravy at weekend brunch are delish!

Sutra,*** Wallingford-  Sutra is an amazing place for special occasions. They serve a delicious pre-set 4 course dinner done supper-club style with two seatings a night. The menu changes every couple of weeks, so I’ve never had the same thing twice going there. 100% organic, seasonal, and happy to accommodate various dietary restrictions.

Szechuan Noodle Bowl,* International District- This is one of our favorite places- we go at least once a week, if not twice or three times. It’s nothing fancy, just damn good handmade Chinese dumplings. Get the Vegetable Dumplings with Hot & Spicy Sauce (it’s not very spicy) and the Green Onion Pancake (both vegan and both awesome). Cash only, but the prices are really reasonable. Read post here.

Tilth,* Wallingford- Local, seasonal, organic food in a renovated Northwest Craftsman house. Chef Maria Hines recently added a vegan menu to accomodate those looking for vegan fare. Pricey, but a lovely dining experience with lots of very small, shared plates. Nice pick for a special leisurely meal with good friends.

Travelers Thali House, ** Beacon Hill – All vegetarian Indian food with many vegan options. Thalis (trays of many small dishes) are a great way to try a range of offerings if you can’t decide on one dish. Reasonable prices, chai for sale, as well as Indian grocery items and spices in their small shop area. For Katie’s review, read post here.

Veggie Grill, *** U-Village/South Lake Union/Downtown – An all-vegan (chain) burger/sandwich/salad joint. Lots of fake “meat” options that are actually quite good.

Violet Sweet Shoppe, *** U-District, Sandpoint/Phinney Ridge – All vegan bakery. This place is *AMAZING*! So many delicious vegan baked goods and they do custom cakes for special occasions. Go there now. They are also SO nice and friendly. New candy shop located in Phinney Ridge.

Wayward Café, *** U-District – All-vegan restaurant with lots of awesome brunch/breakfast options, as well as lunch and dinner. Their menu is huge. A real Seattle vegan establishment.

  1. Thanks for this list! I recently moved to Seattle, so this is helpful, but why don’t I see Wayward Vegan Cafe on your list?
Also, Chaco and In The Bowl are not all-vegan – in fact, ITB’s mock meats are not vegan, they have milk.

    1. Thanks for the info and glad to know the list is helpful! I’m disturbed to find out that ITB is not vegan–when I was there, the server insisted that their mock meats were vegan. Yikes. I’ll update this list accordingly. Also, thanks for the reminder about Wayward. I’ve actually never been there. I was just at Chaco this week and their board says that all food is vegan; my understanding is that the only thing that’s not is their coffee bar has cow’s milk options. Thanks for commenting!

  2. You should add Black Coffee Coop (or at least go there if you havent been)!!! They are on the hill and they offer tons of vegan baked goods and sandwiches!

    1. Thanks, Krina! I didn’t know about Black Coffee Co-op, but I will add it now and definitely check it out in person soon! Thanks for the tip. Any other spots that aren’t on here that should be?

    1. Hi Renee, Thanks so much for letting me know about your awesome business! Everything you’re doing looks great! I’d love to take a class sometime. 🙂

  3. I love this cafe by my office, Bang Bang Cafe in Belltown. They have omni stuff, but also a great vegan breakfast burrito, vegan sandwiches, vegan soups and a bomb-ass vegan mac’n’cheese.

Cherry Street Coffee House is a local chain that is also omni, but has vegetarian and vegan-izable items that are pretty delicious.

    1. Yum! That sounds great! I don’t get to Queen Anne often enough. I’ll add this one to the list too. Keep those recommendations coming! 🙂

  4. Really love your blog, Katie! As a new Seattleite and a new vegan, I’ve found a lot of really useful info here. If I may make a recommendation: Jhan Jay with locations in both Ballard (Ballard Ave.) and Wallingford (45th St.) is a delicious option for vegetarian Thai food. Most of their dishes can be prepared vegan as well. They have a mushroom flavored mock meat that can be added to any dish and it is out of this world! I have only been to the Ballard location and the ambiance and service are fantastic. Keep up the great work!

    1. Hi Michael – I’m so glad that the blog is useful to you. Thanks for the recommendation of Jhan Jay – I will add it to the list! I love Thai food and we have been seriously enjoying the new location of Araya’s that opened on Madison in May. Their lunch specials are amazing!
